I must admit I've never been familiar with the work of
Chico Hamilton. However he was a very versatile drummer
and musician often setting out on his own projects, not
often in the picture of the mainstream jazz public.
He was engaged to the likes of Count Basie, Lionel
Hampton, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus to name a view.
Hamilton also had a foot in West Coast, hard bop even
avant-garde. In the mid sixties he set up his own
production company scoring soundtracks for movies,
commercials, documentaries, etc. Maybe it's time for some
research on this often neglected musician.
